Have you ever heard of Australian Opal before?...
... What about Mexican fire Opal? ...Or, did you know Australians have been buying fine Opal from the north of Brasil (Piaui) and selling in Australia as though it were Australian? Maybe you already know all of that...
... But I’ll bet you never heard of the new find of wonderful precious Opal from Ethiopia...
... showing more mesmerizing play-of-color than you could ever see from Australian Opal, Brasilian Opal or Mexican Opal?

Although newly discovered by the gemstone and jewelry industry, according to anthropologist Dr. L.S.B, Leakey’s 1939 report on artifacts discovered in a Kenyan cave, stone-age man was using Opal to fashion tools dating around 4,000 B.C. Leakey extrapolated there were important Opal mines in the vicinity (Minerals Yearbook, 1939, p.l0).

Now it looks like the Opal tools Dr. Leakey saw in Kenya must have been transported there from hundreds of miles away, because no Opal source has ever been found in Kenya and this freshly-discovered amazing Opal is located in the high plains of the Shewa Plateau in northern Ethiopia.

Now, I don’t know if you’ll have the chance to buy... or even see one of these Ethiopian Opal nodules, but you would get really excited when you break open one and see its breathtaking color: an astonishing Reddish Orange base-color, with glowing Red and Green fire floating all through it. A lot of it looks quite similar to Mexican “fire” Opal; faceting in to spectacular shades of vivid tangerine orange and fiery cherry.

But you’ll find the colors and consistency are by no means confined to the Mexican color-ranges. This Ethiopian treasure trove encompasses every Opal color and consistency imaginable: sparkling white, flaming yellow, blazing brown, brush-fire black and Contra-luz... translucent for cabochons and-or carvings, transparent and jelly-Contra-luz.

It appears to be harder than its Mexican cousin; and faceting Contra-luz material produces a particularly attractive gem -- some have described the beauty of a Contra-luz Opal as The Colors of Heaven.

Was this Dr. Leakey's Opal source?...
... There is no way of knowing, but it is certainly easy to imagine early man sitting by a campfire, marveling at the scintillating beauty locked inside this stone.

The full moon night of November is "Loy Krathong Day": this year, November 16th. It is one of the Kingdom of Thailand’s most famous and magically holidays. ‘Loy’ means to float and ‘Krathong’ refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which

can float on the water. Originally, the ‘Krathong’ was made of banana leaves or the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant.

The leaf cup is used to hold offerings of candles, flowers and incense to ‘make merit’ during Loy Krathong begins to

weave its magic at dusk when ‘Krathongs’, lights and lanterns transform night into day on the river. Flickering candles drifting out across the water create an aura of romance that is irresistible.

It is certainly the most picturesque and beautiful of all Thai celebrations: a truly magical sight, where it is hugely enjoyed by numerous locals, and also the handful of visitors lucky enough to be in the Kingdom .
